Rich Tasks

As a school we spent our non-pupil day thinking about mastery in maths, which means acquiring a deep, long term and secure understanding of the subject. When children are confident to use their existing knowledge and skills to solve problems in other areas of learning they are demonstrating ‘mastery’. This means children need to be fluent in the fundamental number bonds and recall of facts through frequent and varied practice, able to reason, argue and justify why methods have been chosen, and solve problems of increasing complexity by breaking them into series of smaller steps.

During daily maths lessons the children are given rich maths tasks to challenge all of these skills, throughout the school. Here are a few recent examples.
