Separating Mixtures

Year five pupils have been learning about different techniques to separate mixtures of materials using sieves, magnets and filter paper. At the start, the children had to think about the best way to separate two substances from a mixture. Children were using magnets to separate magnetic materials from non magnetic materials, such as paper clips from a collection of paper clips and rice. They also used a sieve to separate materials of different sizes: flour and raisins. Lastly, the children separated sand from a mixture of sand and water using filter paper.
