Perimeter in Year 5

Year 5 are learning about perimeter in maths. They had to estimate the perimeter of the netball court and also the classroom. Outside, the children used a trundle wheel, metre sticks and footsteps to measure the perimeter. They realised that they only had to measure one of the lengths and one of the widths of the court and then add them before doubling the answer. All three methods produced answers that were very close together in size. Next, they worked as a class measuring the perimeter of he classroom. The children expressed the perimeter in four ways: m and cm, m, cm and mm. lastly they had to add up all the lengths of the various walls. The children used a variety of strategies to add the lengths including column addition and partitioning numbers. A good class effort!
